The Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education recently approved the appointment of Dr. Raquel Schmitz as the vice chancellor for administration beginning June 22.
As vice chancellor of administration, Schmitz will be responsible for general agency administration, operational oversight of the chancellor’s office and overall coordination of work related to the coordinating board and agency advisory councils.
“Dr. Schmitz will play a vital role at the State Regents,” said Chancellor Glen D. Johnson. “Her understanding of and experience with higher education in Oklahoma will be invaluable to our agency and the state system of higher education.”
Schmitz spent five years as the chief of staff at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. In that position, she served as the primary liaison between the president of the university and the faculty, staff, students, state and federal legislators, and other education entities. She was also responsible for managing the president’s office budget, serving on the university’s executive cabinet, coordinating meetings and managing special projects for the president.
Before becoming chief of staff at Southeastern, Schmitz was an English and humanities instructor at the university. She has also worked as the general counsel law clerk at OSRHE.
Schmitz is active in the community, serving on the Keep Bryan County Beautiful steering committee from 2005-2008 and the Southeastern Therapeutic Riding Program steering committee since 2008. She is a member of an international women’s organization focused on providing educational opportunities to women and volunteers with Families Feeding Families and Durant Public Schools.
Schmitz graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1992 with a bachelor’s degree in English and received her master’s in English literature in 1994 from Texas Woman’s University. She went on to receive her juris doctorate in 1999 from Oklahoma City University.
