September 22, 2005:: Oklahoma College Students Will Be Battling for Voters
Student organizers from 20 Oklahoma college campuses will be competing next week to see which campus can register the most voters during the third annual VOICE Voter Registration Contest Sept. 28 and 29.
The event is sponsored by Oklahoma Campus Compact’s VOICE (Vocal Oklahomans in Civic Engagement) initiative, a part of the national Raise Your Voice campaign.
The winner will be announced Oct. 3 and will be based on the percentage of students registered in comparison to total campus enrollment. Oklahoma Campus Compact will also present the winning campus with the 2005 Voter Registration Champion banner.
Oklahoma Christian University won last year’s VOICE Voter Registration Contest, while Langston University won the inaugural contest in 2003. Last fall, organizers registered nearly 4,000 new student voters.
Established in 2000, part of Oklahoma Campus Compact’s mission is to increase student civic engagement on Oklahoma college campuses.
