Eastern Professor Earns America Recycles Day Award

Ruth Askew-Brelsford receives the 2012 Oklahoma Recycling Educator Award.

Eastern professor Ruth Askew-Brelsford recently received the 2012 Oklahoma Recycling Educator Award by the Metropolitan Environmental Trust. Eastern Honors students Ashley Jones of Choctaw and Reilly Cloud of Sawyer also attended the awards banquet.

The Metropolitan Environmental Trust (The M.e.t.) recently honored Eastern Oklahoma State College professor Ruth Askew-Brelsford at the organization’s 12th annual America Recycles Day Awards Banquet in Tulsa.

The M.e.t. honored seven individuals or organizations for their extraordinary recycling efforts over the past year. Brelsford received the 2012 Oklahoma Recycling Educator Award.

Brelsford, a speech professor and Honors Program coordinator, worked with Honors Program students and other student organizations to lead an initiative to increase recycling efforts on the Wilburton campus. Because of their efforts, Eastern purchased a recycling trailer and recycling bins to make it convenient for students, faculty and staff to dispose of large amounts of paper, plastic and cardboard on campus. The students also planned and organized several events and promotional materials to raise awareness about Eastern’s efforts to “go green.”

“I am so pleased that other people in Oklahoma are recognizing the efforts we are making here at Eastern to preserve the beautiful natural resources we have in southeastern Oklahoma,” Brelsford said. “It takes all of us, of course, so I am very humbled that the Friends of the Metropolitan Environmental Trust recognized the Honors Program and our efforts to start recycling on our campus and keep this important issue in everybody’s consciousness.”

The other award winners include the Owasso GreenTeam, Oklahoma Recycling School Award; Pride in McAlester, the Oklahoma Recycling Non-Profit Award; Route 66 Marathon, Oklahoma Recycling Event Award; Spirit AeroSystems, Oklahoma Recycling Business Award; Tulsa Authority of Energy, Oklahoma Recycling Government Award; Kenneith Burkett, Oklahoma Recycler of the Year.
