Redlands Community College Viticulture Program Earns Award

Chapel Creek Winery, located on the Redlands Community College Darlington campus, recently earned the Outstanding Event Redbud Meri tAward presented by the Oklahoma Travel Industry Association. The Redbud Awards Ceremony is an annual event recognizing Oklahoma tourism attractions, convention and visitors bureaus, chambers of commerce, advertising agencies, event managers and regional marketing organizations for outstanding efforts to serve and promote Oklahoma's tourism industry.

According to Andrew Snyder, professor of viticulture and manager of Chapel Creek Winery, “the Annual Grape Stomp Festival at the Redlands Darlington campus is a wonderful opportunity to share the winery and vineyard with the community.”

Last fall the winery held its fourth annual grape stomp festival with live entertainment, food, hourly tours, wine sampling and grape stomping. More than 2,100 visitors attended the two-day event which included a dedication of the newly renovated 99-year-old Darlington Chapel.

“The dedication of the chapel was the culmination of 14 years of hard work from Redlands' administration, faculty, staff and students,” said Dr. Amanda Evert, vice president of undergraduate research and resource development. “The beautiful Darlington Chapel is now open to host events ranging from weddings to corporate conferences and of course, future grape stomps.”

Andrew Snyder sees the viticulture events continuing to grow and get bigger every year. "Ths is a great opportunity for customers to learn about the college’s award winning wine products and our self-sustaining educational program.”

Students who participate in the viticulture program are adult learners who are typically looking to open their own vineyard. The classes are held on the weekends to accommodate students’ work schedules. Students gain hands-on experience maintaining vineyards, harvesting grapes, making wine, and selling finished bottles of wine.

Continuing the award-winning grape stomping festival the winery will host its fifth annual event on Aug. 24-25, 2013. For more information, please contact Carlee Nicklos, director of marketing and communications, 405.422.1467 or carlee.nicklos@redlandscc.edu.
