August 11, 2009
For 2009-10, Oklahoma’s Promise has received total funding of $54 million for scholarship costs. This amount is sufficient to fully fund all the Oklahoma’s Promise scholarship obligations in 2009-10. The number of students receiving the scholarship is expected to grow from about 18,000 in 2008-09 to nearly 19,000 in 2009-10. The $54 million was “automatically” provided under a law passed by the Oklahoma Legislature in 2007. The law provides a permanent, dedicated source of funding for the program by allocating monies “off the top” from the state’s General Revenue Fund. The law ensures that the program is fully funded each year from a stable source of revenue.
