Oklahoma’s Promise received total funding or $54 million for scholarship costs in 2008-09, an increase of $5.9 million from 2007-08. The number of students receiving the scholarship is expected to grow from about 17,000 in 2007-08 to nearly 19,000 in 2008-09. The 2008-09 funding amount was “automatically” funded under a new law passed by the 2007 Oklahoma Legislature. The 2007 law provides a permanent, dedicated source of funding for the program by allocating monies “off the top” from the state’s General Revenue Fund. The new law ensures that the program is fully funded each year from a stable source of revenue.
