Nursing Program Has 100 Percent Pass Rate

Nursing Program
Nine OSU-OKC online nursing program graduates at OPSU posted a 100 percent pass rate on their licensing examinations. Those graduates are Adrienne Kirkland, Shawna Vernon, Shayla Koehn, Kim Chill, Lori Morris, Chelsea Wilson, Denise Ball, Melissa King and Selene Garcia.

OSU-Oklahoma City’s associate degree nursing program at Oklahoma Panhandle State University in Goodwell is pleased to announce a 100 percent pass rate for December 2009 graduates taking the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) for the first time.

The coursework is delivered online, while classrooms, skills labs and exams take place on the OPSU campus with students completing their clinical rotations at panhandle area health care facilities.

Health services division head Linda Barren attributes the pass rate to a dedicated nursing faculty and an increased emphasis on early and consistent support to students to ensure their success with the demanding curriculum.

Nine students graduated from the program in December 2009 and are now registered nurses. This is the largest number of graduates and first-time test takers holding a 100 percent pass rate that the OPSU portion of the program has had in the past 10 years. The online program has made many students’ dreams of becoming a nurse a reality in a remote region of the state.

“The need for more rural registered nurses is a high priority because in 2008 the USDA Economic Research Service reported that 57 percent of the Oklahoma population resides in rural communities,” Barren said. “Since most nurses practice in urban areas, it is evident that efforts need to be focused on increasing the number of registered nurses in rural Oklahoma where the majority of the OSU-OKC online program graduates practice.”
