Cameron Student Named DaVinci/Martin Scholar

Cameron University senior Whitni Hatfield, an elementary education major from Lawton, was named a 2011 DaVinci/Martin Scholar by The DaVinci Institute, a private partnership of leaders in higher education across the state of Oklahoma. One of five DaVinci/Martin Scholars selected in the state, Hatfield will receive $3,000 from The DaVinci Institute in her first year of teaching in Oklahoma.

“We are proud of all of the DaVinci/Martin Scholars and excited about the impact they will have through innovation and creativity in their approach to teaching,” says DaVinci Institute PresidentVon Underwood, who serves as Cameron’s dean of liberal arts. “As a dean at Cameron, I am especially proud of Whitni Hatfield and her achievements.”

“I am extremely honored to receive this distinguished award,” Hatfield says. “It is humbling to be a winner of such an esteemed award amongst the finest students in the state. I am very excited to put this award to use in my future classroom.”

Dr. Lynda Robinson, associate professor of education, and Dr. Ronna Vanderslice, dean of education and behavioral sciences, recommended Hatfield for the award.

“Whitni Hatfield is a creative, enthusiastic teacher,” says Robinson. “Her interest in science and her service learning project, The Greentown Effect, which involves children in a community garden and a farmer’s market, make her a positive role model to show children not only that women can be involved in science but also that it’s important to be involved in your community.”

The DaVinci/Martin Scholar award is designed to honor pre-service teachers whose academic accomplishments and service to the university are deemed notable. Winners were determined using four criteria: GPA, Service Learning proposal, a letter of nomination and creativity. Hatfield’s service learning proposal, “The Greentown Effect,” involves fifth-grade children being engaged in a community garden and selling their produce at a farmer’s market to learn about gardening and consumer economics.

The DaVinci Scholars program was established in 2003 to recognize outstanding teacher education graduates from Oklahoma colleges and universities who are selected for their creative teaching methods and potential to influence their students.

Campus E-Clips is published by the Communicators Council, an advisory group to the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education comprised of Oklahoma higher education public information officers.
