OKC Community College named Bellwether finalist

The Community College Futures Assembly recently announced that Oklahoma City Community College was a finalist for its 2004 Bellwether Awards. The Bellwether Awards were established to annually recognize outstanding and innovative community college programs.

Thirty Bellwether Finalist colleges were competitively chosen from the applicants. Ten finalists were selected in the categories of Instructional Programs and Services, cosponsored by the National Council of Instructional Administrators; Planning, Governance and Finance, cosponsored by the Council for Resource Development; and Workforce Development, cosponsored by the National Council for Workforce Education. Finalists will present and winners will be announced at the 2004 Assembly, scheduled for Jan. 31 through Feb. 3 in Orlando, Fla.

Oklahoma City Community College was a finalist in the Planning, Governance and Finance category. This area recognizes programs or activities that improve efficiency and effectiveness in the community college. The college will be competing against institutions from Florida, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Wisconsin and Texas.

Charlotte French, executive director of enrollment management, will present for the College. Her presentation is titled, "Early College Awareness as an Enrollment Management Strategy." French said she will be promoting early college awareness as a legitimate recruitment and retention strategy for a college and added that institutions should make early college awareness a priority in their strategic planning.

The Community College Futures Assembly convenes annually as an independent national policy forum for key leaders to work as a "think tank" in identifying critical issues facing the future of community colleges and to recognize Bellwether Finalist colleges as trend-setting institutions. This year is the Assembly's Tenth Anniversary. For more information about the Bellwether Awards or Community College Futures Assembly, consult the web site at http://www.coe.ufl.edu/futures.
