Officials with Oklahoma Campus Compact (OkCC), the state member organization of Campus Compact hosted by the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education, announced recently that East Central University, Eastern Oklahoma State College, Langston University and the University of Oklahoma were the winners of the 2018 Voter Registration Contest for in-state students. Additionally, Langston University registered the most out-of-state students, and Eastern Oklahoma State College had the highest proportion of out-of-state students registered.
Northeastern Oklahoma A&M College, Northeastern State University, Seminole State College and the University of Central Oklahoma were in-state student runners-up.
All together, 21 institutions across the state registered 3,117 in-state and 127 out-of-state students. The competition grouped institutions with similar-sized full-time enrollments.
“Congratulations to the winners and all of the campuses that participated in the contest,” said Chancellor Glen D. Johnson. “Colleges and universities are vital to the creation of lifetime citizens through democratic engagement. I commend our institutions for encouraging more students to make their voices heard by casting their votes.”
The contest recognizes the greatest proportion of in-state students registered by four categories of institutions by size of enrollment, along with the runner-up in each category. It also recognizes institutions involved in helping out-of-state students to register in their home states by awarding the institution with the most out-of-state students registered and the institution with the greatest proportion of out-of-state students registered.
OkCC sponsors the annual Voter Registration Contest for its member institutions as part of its mission to foster civic engagement. The duration of the contest encompassed summer student orientation sessions through the Oklahoma State Election Board Oct. 12 deadline for the general election.
Campus Compact is a coalition of colleges and universities that develops college students’ awareness and skills in civic responsibility through service learning, community service and civic engagement. Thirty-one states have Campus Compact offices. OkCC was formed in 2000 and currently has 34 participating public and private colleges and universities.
