Campus Best Practices

Priorities

  • Confirm continued National Incident Management System (NIMS) compliance.
  • Encourage Title IX compliance, including standards presented in the:
    • Campus Sexual Violence Elimination (SaVE) Act.
    • University of Montana resolution agreement (U.S. Department of Justice/U.S. Department of Education).
  • Encourage Clery Act compliance.
  • Encourage creation of an active threat-assessment task force on every campus.
  • Advocate increased drug and alcohol and mental health counseling.
  • Identify/develop web and print resources.
  • Others set by the Task Force, as needed.

Issue Monitoring, Advocacy and Research

Priorities

  • Mobilize public advocacy for campus safety and security measures.
  • Maintain current law regarding guns on college campuses.
  • Review existing federal and state laws and policies pertinent to the purposes of the Task Force.
  • Others set by the Task Force, as needed.

Training and Plan Development

Priorities

  • Identify training opportunities for campus personnel and encourage campus drill calendars to include:
    • Behavioral threat-assessment training and response.
    • Notification planning.
    • Emergency response plans.
    • Intruder response.
    • Continuity of operations.
    • Mental health first aid training.
    • SBIRT (Screening, Brief, Intervention, Referral, Treatment) training.
  • Help institutional personnel identify and submit grants to support a campus safety program.
  • Others set by the Task Force, as needed.
